Several years ago, I was looking for a gumbo recipe, and thumbing through several of my cookbooks found “Austin Ford’s Gumbo” in “Mary Mac’s Southern Tea Room.” Well, my parents were married by Father Ford, and my middle name is Austin, in part after him. Of course, I made it… when the world speaks to you in this way, you should listen. It’s been my go-to recipe for gumbo ever since. Strange, small world.

I found Marie’s article and had to smile with the memory of the summer of 1969 when I volunteered at Emmaus House and taught theater classes. I have never again had quite the experience that I had while working there. Thank you for sharing your memories.
